THE POOR GIRL THE KING CHOSE

An African Family Drama and Romance

Chapter One: The Girl Nobody Wanted

"Amara! Are you still sleeping?"

Mama Ngozi's angry voice echoed through the small mud house.

Amara quickly sat up on her mat. The morning sun had barely risen, but her stepmother had already found a reason to shout at her.

"I'm awake, Mama," she answered quietly.

"Then get up! Go to the stream, fetch water, prepare breakfast, and sweep the compound. Or do you think you're a princess?"

Her stepsister, Chinyere, burst into laughter from the doorway.

"Princess indeed! Look at her clothes. Even the village goats dress better than she does!"

The two women laughed.

Amara lowered her eyes and continued dressing. She had learned that answering back only made her day worse.

Ever since her father died three years earlier, her life had become unbearable. Her stepmother treated her like a servant, while Chinyere made sure she never forgot that she was unwanted.

But there was one thing neither of them knew.

Amara's father had left behind a secret.

A secret that could change her life forever.

That morning, as Amara walked towards the village stream with an empty clay pot balanced against her hip, she heard the sound of horses approaching.

She stepped aside as several royal guards rode past.

Behind them was a black carriage decorated with gold.

"The king's carriage!" a woman shouted.

The entire village rushed towards the main road.

Amara stood at a distance, watching curiously.

The carriage stopped.

A tall young man stepped out. He wore a beautifully embroidered traditional outfit, and a golden crown rested on his head.

Prince Obinna.

The future king of Umuora.

Every unmarried girl in the village dreamed of marrying him. Chinyere had spent months bragging that she would one day become his wife.

But the prince wasn't looking at the wealthy merchants' daughters or the village chief's beautiful nieces.

His eyes had settled on Amara.

"Who is that girl?" he asked his royal adviser.

The adviser followed his gaze.

"That is Amara, Your Highness. The daughter of the late Chief Okafor. She lives with her stepmother."

The prince continued watching her.

"Bring her to the palace."

Amara's eyes widened.

"Me?" she whispered.

Before she could understand what was happening, the royal guards approached her.

Across the road, Chinyere's smile disappeared.

Her mother grabbed her arm.

"Something is wrong," Mama Ngozi whispered.

That evening, a royal messenger arrived at their compound with an announcement that left the entire household speechless.

The prince had chosen Amara to attend the royal marriage selection ceremony.

But as the messenger handed Amara a sealed letter, he leaned closer and whispered:

"Your Highness must never discover who your father really was."

Amara froze.

Who was her father?

And why was the royal household afraid of the truth?
