I always heard the whirring sound from my elder sister's bedroom. The kind of sound a barbing clipper makes when turned on. And I always wondered why she kept shaving at odd hours of the day.
I'm Jason, the last born of three children. My parents gave birth to two girls before me and I am the only boy. My eldest sister, Cheryl is currently studying Law at one odd sounding university in Abuja. So I'm stuck at home with my elder sister Gina who is in S. S. 2. Myself am in S. S. 1.
Everyday (and I mean every single day), I always hear the sound of a clipper in my sister's bedroom. Just that it sounds stronger and more louder. This has been going on for three weeks now.
The Day it Started
This all started when one day, Senior Stephanie, a senior of mine who happens to be in my sister's class, called me from the playground and gave me a small brown envelope. I remember that sister Gina did not come to school that day. "Give it to Gina," she said. "Tell her I sent you"
Senior Stephanie was my school mummy. So naturally I asked her what was inside. She eyed me in a way that I have never been eyed before. "I don't know...... And don't open that thing, if not, I'll kill you"
And she sounded like she meant it.
So I did as I was told. All the time I kept feeling the package. Whatever was inside definitely had the shape of a flower.
When I got home I gave it to my elder sister. Gina opened the brown envelope and gave me a bland look. And then said a watery "Thank you"
What She told me it was
Later that afternoon I heard her arguing with senior Stephanie over the phone, asking her why she gave me the stuff to bring to her. When I asked sister Gina what it was, she said, "Don't worry. It's something I need for my project. "
Poor 14 year old me, what more could I say? I shut up and took my mind off the mysterious package.
Chaos
That night was the first time I heard it.
'Vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!'
It was what woke me up in fact, at around 11:30pm in the night.
To make you understand what I how loud that thing was, I sleep in a different room from my sisters'. I literally heard it through the wall.
I woke up with groggy eyes wondering who or what was making that sound. I simply recognized it as something that only a shaver or barbing clipper could make.
But why was my sister shaving by this time of the night? And why in her room? And why was she making those soft noises like she was crying?
Before I could go to ask her that night, the sound had stopped.
The following morning, I asked her about what I heard the past night and she smiled. "It's the project I was talking about, dear" She said as she fondled my hair.
Something about that smile made me uneasy. When I asked if I could come and help her with the project, she said no, that only she could do it properly.
So I let the matter be.
From that day onwards, my sleep was continually plagued with those awful sounds - the whirring equipment and my sister's moaning voice. And everytime I dismissed it and concluded that she was busy with her project.
That is until I noticed she was acting weird. Like the day she took her sheets out to wash. She had peed on the bed. And sister Gina I know DOESN'T bedwet. Also, I always saw her walking funny the day after.
I was wondering what was happening to my sister. So one day, I decided that I had had enough. I was going to find out the project my sister was working on and assist her with it, liked she it or not.
That night, I waited for the whirring sound to wake me up. Which it unfailingly did at 11:41pm. I waited till 12am then snuck out of my room and headed to my sister's room.
The door was open. Good sign.
I tiptoed to her room door and opened it wide.
And God! What my both eyes saw that day.............
Stay tuned for Part Two.
