I always told my friends that Alex was different. He was caring, funny, and he always texted me good morning.
But last week, something felt off. He was always pressing his phone, smiling, then quickly locking it when I came close.
On Tuesday night at around 2:03 AM, his phone lit up while he was in the bathroom. I know I shouldn't have checked, but my heart told me to look.
What I saw broke me.
There was a chat with a girl named Jess. The messages were:
"Heading out with her now 😏"
"Babe I miss you ❤️"
"Can't wait for tonight 😘"
All sent at 2:02 AM. While I was in the living room waiting for him to come back from the bathroom, he was telling another girl he missed her.
I confronted him. He first said it was his cousin. Then he said it was just a joke. Then he said I was overreacting for checking his phone.
That was the moment I realized - the biggest red flag is not the cheating itself. It is when they make you feel guilty for catching them.
If your boyfriend hides his phone, gets angry when you ask questions, and blames you for his own behavior, that is not love. That is manipulation.
I left that night. It was painful, but my peace is now back.
This experience taught me that love should not make you feel anxious. A healthy relationship should bring peace, not confusion. If you are constantly checking his phone because of fear, that fear is already your answer. Choose yourself first.
To every girl in Jos and anywhere else reading this: Trust your gut. If his phone says something else, believe the phone, not his words. Your peace is more important than any relationship.
