PROLOGUE
In the city of Aveline, yesterday did not exist.
Every morning, people woke up with empty memories of the previous day. Mothers forgot conversations with their children. Husbands forgot arguments with their wives. Friends forgot promises they had made just hours earlier.
Nobody questioned it anymore.
It had been happening for as long as anyone could remember.
Every night at exactly midnight, the city’s memories reset. The government called it a natural phenomenon. Scientists called it an unexplained neurological condition. Religious leaders called it a punishment.
But nobody knew the truth.
Nobody, except a twenty-two-year-old girl named Elara.
Unlike everyone else, Elara remembered everything.
She remembered the conversations, the arguments, the people who disappeared and the promises people made but never kept. She had spent years pretending to forget because being different in Aveline was dangerous.
She kept hundreds of notebooks hidden beneath her bedroom floor. Each one contained memories that the rest of the world had lost.
Then, on a cold Thursday morning, something happened that changed everything.
For the first time in her life, Elara woke up and discovered that tomorrow had disappeared.
Every calendar in the city showed the same date.
Every clock had stopped at 11:59 p.m.
And every person she encountered seemed strangely calm.
Except for one little boy standing outside her apartment.
He was holding a photograph.
In it was Elara, much older, standing beside him.
She had never seen the boy before.
He looked at her and asked:
“Did you finally remember why you killed tomorrow?”
Elara couldn’t speak.
The boy placed the photograph in her hands and walked away.
On the back of the photograph were five handwritten words:
DO NOT TRUST YOUR MEMORIES.
And for the first time, Elara wondered whether remembering everything was really a gift.
Or the reason the world had stopped moving.
