Some secrets are buried with the dead. Others come back to bury the living.
At exactly 6:15 on a Friday morning, a young woman walked into a church and discovered that everyone had gathered to bury her.
Her name was Amara Eze.
She was twenty-four years old, alive, breathing and standing right there.
Yet, at the front of the church was a beautifully decorated coffin bearing her photograph.
Beneath it were two dates:
AMARA EZE
2002 – 2026
For a moment, she couldn't move.
The church was filled with people dressed in black. Some were crying, others whispered prayers, and a few stood silently, staring at the coffin.
But what frightened Amara most wasn't seeing her own photograph.
It was seeing her family.
Her mother was sitting in the front row, crying uncontrollably. Her father held her mother's hand, his face expressionless. And her elder brother, Daniel, stood beside them, occasionally wiping tears from his eyes.
Amara almost screamed.
"Mummy..."
The word escaped her lips, but nobody turned.
She took a step forward.
Then another.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
UNKNOWN NUMBER:
Don't say a word. Don't let them know you're here.
Her hands began to shake.
Another message arrived.
Look carefully at your brother. He's the reason you're standing outside that coffin.
Amara slowly raised her head.
Daniel was no longer crying.
He was smiling.
Not the kind of smile people give when they're happy. It was a strange, uncomfortable smile, as though he knew something nobody else in the church knew.
Three days earlier, Amara had received a mysterious phone call.
The caller was a woman whose voice sounded strangely familiar.
"Amara, you need to leave your house immediately."
"Who is this?" Amara had asked.
"There's no time to explain. Your family is planning something."
Amara laughed nervously.
"Are you threatening me?"
The woman paused before answering.
"No, my dear. I'm trying to save you from people who have already buried you in their minds."
Then the call disconnected.
Amara tried calling back, but the number was unavailable.
She thought it was a prank until she returned home that evening and discovered that someone had entered her bedroom.
Her wardrobe was empty.
Her passport was missing.
Her birth certificate had disappeared.
And on her bedroom mirror, written in red lipstick, were five terrifying words:
YOU WERE NEVER BORN HERE.
Now, standing inside the church, Amara finally understood that something was terribly wrong.
Her phone vibrated again.
Ask your brother what happened on October 16, 2023.
Her blood ran cold.
That was the exact date her younger sister, Esther, mysteriously disappeared.
The family had told everyone Esther drowned in a river. Her body was never recovered, but the funeral had still taken place.
Amara had spent three years mourning her sister.
She looked at Daniel again.
He suddenly turned towards the back of the church.
Their eyes met.
For the first time that morning, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
He had seen her.
He opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, every light in the church went out.
A loud scream came from the front row.
Then the church speakers crackled.
A woman's voice echoed through the building.
"Since everyone is gathered here, I think it's time we told the truth."
Amara froze.
She knew that voice.
It was her own.
The voice continued.
"Daniel, you promised me she would never find out."
A heavy silence followed.
Then came three loud knocks.
KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.
They were coming from inside the coffin.
People began screaming and rushing towards the exit.
Amara stood motionless.
The coffin lid slowly opened.
And a pale hand emerged from inside.
Someone was alive in there.
A figure slowly sat up.
It was a young woman with Amara's face.
Her exact face.
Her exact eyes.
Her exact smile.
The woman looked directly at Amara and whispered:
"You're late, sister. I've been waiting for you."
Amara stumbled backwards.
Because the woman inside the coffin was not a stranger.
It was Esther.
Her younger sister.
The sister everyone had buried three years ago.
And just before the church doors opened, Esther said something that shattered everything Amara thought she knew:
"Mummy knows which one of us is the real daughter. And tonight, she's going to choose who lives."
