The Stranger Who Changed Daniel's Life
Summary / Hook:
Daniel had only ₦1,240 left when a stranger collapsed beside him, forcing him to make a decision that would change his life.
A Thursday Evening in Abuja
At 6:17 p.m. on a Thursday, Daniel stood beside the roadside in Jabi, staring at his phone.
₦1,240.
That was all the money left in his account.
He refreshed his banking app twice, hoping the balance would somehow change. It didn't.
Around him, Abuja was becoming busy. Cars crawled through the evening traffic while hawkers moved between vehicles, trying to sell bottled water, snacks and other small items. People were rushing home before the traffic became worse.
Daniel put his phone in his pocket and looked down the road.
He had not eaten since the previous afternoon.
For almost three months, he had been searching for work. He had sent CVs to companies, visited offices and spoken to people who promised they would "get back to him."
Most never did.
His mother had called that morning.
"Daniel, have you eaten?"
He had lied.
"Yes, Mama. I'm fine."
He wasn't fine.
But he didn't want his mother worrying about him.
The Man on the Ground
Daniel was waiting for a bus when he noticed an elderly man standing a few metres away.
The man suddenly grabbed his chest.
Then he fell.
For a moment, nobody moved.
People stared. Someone shouted, "Somebody should help him!"
Another person pulled out a phone and began recording.
Daniel froze.
He looked at the elderly man.
Then he remembered his own father.
Without thinking about his empty account or the bus he needed to catch, Daniel ran toward him.
"Sir! Can you hear me?"
The man opened his eyes but couldn't speak properly.
Daniel immediately called for help and asked a nearby driver to assist. A few other people finally came forward.
Within minutes, they managed to get the man into a vehicle to take him for medical attention.
Daniel stood beside the road, breathing heavily.
He had missed his bus.
He had also spent part of the little money he had left helping with the emergency.
But strangely, he didn't regret it.
The Phone Call
About an hour later, Daniel's phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
"Hello?"
"Is this Daniel?"
"Yes."
"My name is Samuel. I'm the son of the man you helped today."
Daniel became quiet.
Samuel explained that his father had survived the incident and was receiving treatment.
Then he said something Daniel wasn't expecting.
"My father told me what happened. He said you were the first person who actually helped him."
Daniel smiled.
"I only did what anyone should have done."
There was silence on the phone.
Then Samuel asked, "Are you currently working?"
Daniel hesitated.
"No."
"Send me your CV."
A Different Kind of Opportunity
Two days later, Daniel went for an interview.
The company wasn't offering him a huge salary. It wasn't the dream job he had imagined when he started searching.
But it was a real opportunity.
A few weeks later, Daniel received his first salary.
That evening, he called his mother.
"Mama."
"Yes, my son?"
"I've gotten a job."
There was silence.
Then she started praying for him over the phone.
Daniel sat quietly, smiling.
He thought about the ₦1,240 he had in his account that Thursday.
At the time, he had thought he was completely broke.
But sometimes, life doesn't change because you suddenly have money.
Sometimes, it changes because you make the right decision when you have almost nothing.
And Daniel's story began with a stranger on the roadside.
