Nathalia Filgueiras and the Florida Learjet 60 Crash: Facts and Investigation

Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was 20 when the Learjet 60 she was co-piloting crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, 2026. All nine people aboard died. Her family identified her as one of the pilots.

Filgueiras began flying while she was still in high school. She earned her pilot’s license in 2023, at age 17, while attending West Boca Raton Community High School. The school district’s aviation program helped support her training, according to local news reports cited by the Associated Press. AP report on the victims

Filgueiras’s early achievement drew attention after news of the crash spread. Her family said that flying was a central part of her life and that she learned to fly from her father, who is also a pilot. She had gone on to work as a co-pilot on the Learjet 60.

A pilot’s first license is only one stage in a professional aviation career. Pilots pursue additional certificates, ratings and training as they qualify for different aircraft and roles. Reports on Filgueiras’s license said she had a rating for the Learjet model but was not authorized to serve as pilot in command on that flight. NBC 6 South Florida report

What is known about the Florida crash

The Learjet was traveling from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when it crashed near Greenacres in Palm Beach County. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the accident. Its case page says the flight was lost from radar and radio contact while en route; the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators have said the crew reported icing and turbulence before the aircraft entered a rapid descent. They are examining the aircraft and other evidence to establish what happened. Those reported conditions are part of the investigation; they do not, by themselves, establish the cause of the crash.

Why the investigation matters

Following the crash, Filgueiras’s age and experience became subjects of public discussion. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman urged people not to draw conclusions about her actions from brief radio recordings while the investigation was underway. He said important details—including the aircraft’s condition and the circumstances inside the cockpit—were not yet known. Florida Today’s report on Isaacman’s statement

The NTSB’s investigation will consider evidence from multiple sources, including the aircraft, its records, weather and communications. The agency has not announced a cause. Until investigators complete their work, it is important to separate confirmed facts from speculation.

Filgueiras’s story is more than the circumstances of the crash: she was a young woman who began pursuing aviation while still in school and went on to fly professionally. Her family, friends and the other victims’ loved ones are grieving as investigators work to understand what happened.
