THE GIRL WHO SMILED THROUGH HER TEARS Chapter Two

Amara stood outside the old mansion, staring at the large black gate.

Her hands were trembling.

She checked the address on her phone again. It was the same place Daniel had sent her the previous night.

Taking a deep breath, she knocked.

Within seconds, the gate slowly opened.

A tall man dressed in black appeared.

"Amara?" he asked.

"Yes. Are you Daniel?"

He nodded.

"Come inside. There is something you need to see."

As Amara entered the mansion, she noticed something strange. The walls were covered with family photographs, but one particular picture caught her attention.

It was a photograph of her father.

Standing beside him was a young woman who looked exactly like Amara.

Amara moved closer, her eyes widening.

"Who is this woman?" she whispered.

Daniel looked at the photograph and sighed.

"That is your mother."

Amara turned around immediately.

"My mother? No! That's impossible. My mother has never told me about this place."

Daniel walked towards a wooden table and picked up an old brown envelope.

"Your mother has been hiding the truth from you for fourteen years."

Amara's heart began to race.

"What truth?"

Daniel handed her the envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate, an old photograph and a handwritten letter.

She opened the letter with shaking hands.

The first sentence nearly made her collapse.

"To my beloved daughter, Amara. If you are reading this, then I am no longer alive, and the people you trust most have kept the biggest secret of your life from you."

Tears filled her eyes.

She continued reading.

"My daughter, I did not die because of an accident. Someone wanted me gone because I discovered a terrible family secret. I tried to protect you, but I failed."

Amara covered her mouth.

Her father had not died in an accident?

All these years, her family had lied to her?

Before she could finish the letter, Daniel suddenly grabbed her arm.

"Listen carefully. We don't have much time."

"Why? What is happening?"

Daniel looked towards the entrance.

"Because the person responsible for your father's death is still alive."

Amara stepped backwards.

"Who is it?"

Daniel's eyes became watery.

Then he whispered:

"Your own mother."

Amara felt the world disappear beneath her feet.

"No! You're lying! My mother would never hurt my father!"

Daniel shook his head.

"I wish I were lying. But there is something even worse."

He opened a drawer and brought out another photograph.

This time, Amara saw a picture of a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Written at the back were the words:

"My first daughter, Amara. Born alongside her twin sister."

Amara stared at the photograph.

Twin sister?

She had never been told she had a twin.

"Where is she?" Amara asked, barely able to speak.

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"She is alive."

"Where?"

Before Daniel could answer, a loud bang came from the front door.

Someone had entered the mansion.

Daniel quickly switched off the lights.

Then a familiar female voice echoed through the hallway.

"Amara! I know you're in there!"

Amara froze.

She recognized that voice.

It was her mother.

But what happened next was something she would never forget.

Daniel leaned close to her ear and whispered:

"Don't make a sound. Your mother isn't the only person looking for you."

Suddenly, Amara's phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent her a message.

She opened it.

The message contained only one sentence:

"Ask Daniel what he did to your twin sister fourteen years ago."

Amara slowly turned towards Daniel.

His face had gone pale.

For the first time since she arrived, Daniel looked truly frightened.

And then he said something that changed everything.

"Amara, I am not the man you think I am."
