THE LAST GIRL IN ROOM 307

Chapter one- the empty bed

At 2:13 a.m., I received a WhatsApp message from a girl who had supposedly been dead for three weeks.

Please, don't let them change your room.

I stared at my phone.

The sender's name was unfamiliar.

Favour – Room 307.

I lived in Room 307 at a university in Ibadan.

There were four of us in the room, but Favour had disappeared three weeks earlier.

When I reported it, our hostel supervisor laughed.

"Favour who? There are only three students in that room."

I thought she was joking.

Until I opened my wardrobe the next morning and found a photograph of four girls.

Someone had circled Favour's face in red ink.

Underneath it were five words:

YOU ARE NEXT, AMARA.

Chapter two- the voice notes

I played the voice note Favour had sent.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Amara, if you're hearing this, it means they've started again. Don't trust Blessing. She knows what happened in Room 307."

I immediately looked at Blessing's bed.

She was staring at me.

"Who sent you that?"

I froze.

I hadn't told anyone about the message.

Then Blessing slowly smiled.

"Amara, Favour never had your number."

Before I could respond, someone knocked three times.

Our hostel door opened.

The security man stood outside holding a brown envelope.

"Someone left this for the girl who sleeps beside the window."

That was my bed.

Inside the envelope was a hostel key.

Room 307.

But our room number was 307 already.

And on the key was a small tag.

307 – BASEMENT.

End of Chapter Two.
