Chapter One: The Woman Who Came to Our Door
When I married Tunde, I believed I had found a man who would never give me a reason to regret choosing him.
He was hardworking, respectful and always made me feel loved. We had been married for three years, and although we didn't have everything we wanted, I was happy.
At least, I thought I was.
One Saturday morning, I was preparing breakfast when someone knocked on our door.
I opened it and saw a young woman holding the hand of a little boy who looked about five years old.
"Good morning. Please, is Tunde around?" she asked.
"Yes. Who are you?"
She looked at me for a moment before answering.
"My name is Sandra. I need to speak with my son's father."
I smiled politely.
"His father?"
She looked straight into my eyes.
"Your husband, Tunde."
I felt something strange in my chest.
Before I could ask another question, Tunde came out of the bedroom.
The moment he saw Sandra, the colour disappeared from his face.
"Sandra? What are you doing here?"
She laughed bitterly.
"So you still remember me?"
I turned towards my husband.
"Tunde, who is this woman?"
He quickly replied, "Nobody. She is just someone I used to know."
Sandra shook her head.
"Nobody? Is that what you call the mother of your child?"
I looked at the little boy.
He had Tunde's eyes, his nose and even the same small mark on his forehead.
My husband tried to take me inside, but I refused to move.
"Is this your son?" I asked.
Tunde remained silent.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
Sandra placed a brown envelope on the table.
"Three years ago, I told him I was pregnant. He promised to take responsibility, but after some time, he stopped answering my calls. I have been raising this boy alone."
I turned to Tunde.
"You told me you had never had a child before we got married."
He lowered his head.
"I can explain."
I started crying.
"How long have you been lying to me?"
He reached for my hand, but I stepped back.
Then Sandra said something that made the entire room go quiet.
"There's something else your husband hasn't told you. His mother knew about this child from the beginning."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
I picked up the envelope and opened it.
Inside was a DNA test result.
My hands trembled as I read the words:
99.9% probability of paternity.
I looked at my husband.
"Did you know?"
He finally broke down.
"Yes. But I was afraid of losing you."
I wiped my tears and asked him one question:
"If you could hide a whole child from me, what else have you been hiding?"
He opened his mouth to speak.
But before he could answer, his phone rang.
The caller's name appeared on the screen.
MUM.
I picked it up and answered.
A woman's voice immediately said:
"Tunde, please tell your wife not to believe Sandra. That child is not the only secret in this family."
My heart stopped.
